Best Man DutiesSo now your best pal is going to be your best man. Awesome! Check out our top five best man duties so that your best man is all set and sorted for your big day:

1. Plan the bachelor party. Yup, the first of the best man duties is a pretty fun one. The best man gets the honor of throwing the groom one last shindig as a “single” guy. The groom should be consulted – at least a little – to make sure the party isn’t too over the top (or too tame!) for his liking. Groomsmen should get involved too – many hands make light work!

2. Get your tux. This will include getting fitted and paying for it. The bride or groom should have more specific details, but typical responsibilities include getting professional measurements and emailing them to the groom, picking up your tux, and returning it. All groomsmen are usually expected to cover the cost of their rentals.

3. Guard the wedding rings. Traditionally, the rings are given to the best man for safe keeping until the ring exchange. Sometimes that includes the responsibility of tying those rings to the ring pillow for the ring bearer to carry.

4. Give a best man speech at the reception. The best man is often called on to give a toast to the bride, to the groom, or to the couple. The best man speech doesn’t have to be anything fancy or Oscar-worthy, but it should be in good taste. When writing a best man speech, consider the wide age range of your audience and sprinkle in a few not-too-raunchy jokes to hopefully get a laugh (or happy tear) or two.

5. Dance with the maid/matron of honor. If the couple is having a wedding party dance to kick off the reception, you’ll probably be expected to slow dance with the maid or matron of honor – not your date for the wedding (don’t worry, you can do that later!). No Michael Jackson moves necessary; just try not to step on anyone’s toes.
